Privacy policy

This explains what personal information I collect when you use this website or get in touch, why I collect it, and what your rights are. In short: I collect as little as possible and never sell it.

Who I am

This website is run by Laura Conway, a freelance web designer and developer trading as Laura The Web Dev, based in Brighton & Hove, UK. I am the "controller" of your personal information under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).

You can contact me about anything in this policy at hello@laurabrightondev.com.

What I collect and why

When you use the contact form or email me

If you send a message through the contact form or email me, I receive your name, email address, the service you're interested in (if you choose one) and anything you write in your message. I use this to reply to you and, if we work together, to provide my services and send invoices.

Contact form messages are delivered to my inbox by Cloudflare, which hosts this website. Before a message is sent, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that it's coming from a person and not a spam bot. To do this it looks at technical signals from your browser, such as your IP address and browser details. It's used only to stop spam, not for advertising - see Cloudflare's Turnstile privacy policy.

Legal basis: my legitimate interest in responding to enquiries, and taking steps at your request before entering into a contract. If we work together, it becomes necessary for that contract.

I keep emails for as long as they're needed for our work together, and business records for as long as the law requires for tax and accounting.

Website analytics (only if you agree)

If you accept analytics cookies, I use Google Analytics to understand how people find and use this site - for example which pages are visited, roughly where visitors are in the world, what device and browser they use, and which website or advert they came from. This helps me improve the site. Google Analytics doesn't log or store IP addresses, and I don't use it to identify you personally.

Legal basis: your consent. Google Analytics doesn't load at all unless you accept, and you can withdraw consent at any time through the cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. See the cookie policy for details.

Google processes this data on my behalf. Some of it may be processed in the United States, where Google is covered by the UK-US "data bridge", which UK law recognises as providing adequate protection.

Google Analytics keeps this data for 14 months, then deletes it automatically. If you come back to the site, that period starts again from your latest visit.

Website hosting and security

This website is hosted by Cloudflare. Like almost every web host, Cloudflare automatically processes basic technical information when pages are requested, such as IP address, browser type and the time of the request, to deliver the site and protect it from attacks and spam. Cloudflare processes this on my behalf and may do so in the United States, where it is covered by the UK-US "data bridge".

Legal basis: my legitimate interest in running a secure, reliable website, including keeping the contact form free of spam.

What I don't do

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

To use any of these rights, email hello@laurabrightondev.com. I'll respond within one month, as the law requires.

Complaints

If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, please tell me first so I can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or by calling 0303 123 1113.

Changes to this policy

I'll update this page if anything changes. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
